Tibouchina heteromalla (Silver leafed Princess Flower) - This evergreen shrub from Brazil has an upright growth habit to 8-10 feet tall with velvety silver-green 4-6 inch long leaves, with prominent veins and puffed up in the middle. The 1 1/2 inch wide violet flowers on long spikes bloom mid-summer and last until fall. Loves full sun and moist soil during the growing season but tolerates regular to only occasional irrigation in our coastal gardens. Has proven hardy in our nursery garden to 30 F with only slight young growth tips being damaged. In our January 2007 cold snap with temperatures to 25° F several nights this plant was frozen back but rebounded by the following year. The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery and in our own and other Santa Barbara gardens. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information or disagrees with what we have written.
Tibouchina heteromalla is a spectacular addition to the tropical garden. The plants are tender when temperatures dip below 30. Tibouchina heteromalla prefers moist soil. Except for very close to the coast it also prefers a little shade during the heat of the day. The Silver Leafed Princess Flower bush can grow to 10 feet tall and about 4-5 feet wide. The spectacular clusters of flowers at the tips of the branches during the Spring and Early summer are spectacular. The leaves are interesting enough to keep the plant in the foreground during the rest of the season. Typically Tibouchina heteromalla plants will need to be trimmed hard in the winter.
