Melocactus'ler diğer kaktüslerden ayrılır 30 40 türü mevcuttur ve hepside tropikal ortamlarda yetişen çekici ve ilginç bitkilerdir daha çok nem ve daha az oranda gölge - aydınlık - hafif güneşli ortamlarda yetişirler kışın diğer kaktüslerin aksine arada bir sulanmaları gerekir ve bahar yaz aylarında ise düzenli sulanıp beslenmeleri gerekir, sulama araları toprağın iyice kuruması bekleyin. Minimum sıcaklıkları 16 derecedir ideal oran 24, 26 derecedir gece sıcaklık farklarını sevmezler gece de sıcak isterler kökleri hassastır saksı değişimden sonra çok dikkat edilmelidir tropikal ortamlarda yaşamalarına rağmen aşırı nemi egale edemezler, çürümeye yatkınlardır. diğer kaktüsler de ki gibi köklerinde ve gövdesinde saksı değişiminden sonra oluşabilecek yaraların kuruyup kapanması için 1,2 hafta beklenmelidir zengin, drenajlı alkali olmayan topraklarda yetişirler sulama yaparken kireçsiz su kullanmak gerekiyor. Mümkün olduğunca sığ saksı kullanılmalıdır kökleri derine inmez az saçak kök sistemi yapar.

Bu kaktüsün gelişimi gövde oranları maksimum boyutlara ulaştıktan sonra üstten türk şapkası (fes) diye adlandırılan oluşumla devam eder bazen bu oluşum 1 metreye kadar uzayabilir bu kaktüsler yavaş büyüyen uzun ömürlü bitkilerdir yeni başlayanlar için genel kanı tavsiye edilmeyen, zor türlerdir. Çoğu tehlike altındadır.
