Nelumbo nucifera Sacred Lotus

Nelumbo nucifera--Sacred Lotus

The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) possesses great significance in Eastern religion. Apart from its majestic beauty, the Nelumbo nucifera Lotus is held sacred because of the mystical effects it can produce.

Nelumbo nucifera was often smoked or made into a tea with the idea that it would create a feeling of joy that permeated the mind and body. The flower of the Sacred Lotus was immortalized in Homer's The Odyssey, in which Ulysses and his crew come ashore on the Island of the Lotus-Eaters.

The tubers that form at the bottom of the plant in the winter were and are commonly used as food my Native American tribes and in Japan.

To grow Nelumbo nucifera Sacred Lotus from seed, file down one side of the seed with sand paper until there is a small amount of white color showing and place the seed in water. The Sacred Lotus seed should swell over the next few days and sprout within a week, growing quickly for the next couple of weeks. There are enough nutrients in the Nelumbo nucifera seed to support the plant for 30 days, but it should be planted as soon as practical. Plant in a pot with plenty of room for root growth below and around the seed (at least 4 inches) and place in water with the top of the pot between 12 and 18 inches below the surface of the water. Leaves will appear within a month and the plant should bloom in the second growing season.

Citrux Maxima - Pummelo

Small to medium sized tree, usually only 10-20ft high, but may grow to 50ft under ideal conditions. The pummelo is frost hardy, but grows best in warmer climates with lots of rainfall. It is an ideal choice for tropical zones, but also grows well in subtropical climates. Pummelo's do quite well in Florida and California. Trees also grow well in swampy damp soil and are often found growing wild along river banks and streams. Trees can flower up to four times a year. Propagation: Commonly by seed which usually produce trees very near in fruit quality to their parent, but named varieties are propagated through grafts.

A vining and as yet unnamed, flower form Ecuador. The unbeleivable blooms can measure well over a foot across and are a bright mix or reds, yellows, and orange. This particular species has the largest blooms seen on any Bomarea to date and is still extremely rare in cultivation.

Description: Vining plant to 20-40ft. This type has been dubbed "Fiesta" by some sources, though the species is currently unknown or unnamed. Blooms more or less year-round, though blooming can be cut off during colder months.

Hardiness: Will take some frost and freezing temperatures if brief. Prefers a mild-temperate or subtropical climate with moderate temperatures from 50-80F.

Growing Environment: Provide ample water. Grow in shade in climates where the temperature regularly tops 90F.

Propagation: By seeds, root division.

Uses: Generally grown as an ornamental. The plant is quite a sight for the eyes!

Native Range: This unknown species is native to Ecuador.

Clump forming with long narrow grass like leaves. Flowering late summer they are highly attractive. Individual narrow tubes held in clusters on erect stems, open from the bottom up. Beautiful planted with daylilies or Echinops.

The plant attracts hummingbirds.

The plant is excellent for cutting.

The plant resists deer and rabbits.

BLUE FESCUE

Fescues are mound-forming, semi-evergreen perennials used as accent and specimen plantings in the foreground of borders and in rock gardens. Blue fescues look beautiful in this setting or mixed with wildflowers, but with the availability of seed they can be used in many other areas where low maintenance turf is desired.

Fescue is grown for the blue gray foliage. The flowers are insignificant and should be removed to help retain the mound like effect. Blue fescue must be planted in well-drained soil in order to grow their best. It has good winter color and looks green during this period. Blue fescues are very shade tolerant, often found in the dry shade of trees.

This small-scale ornamental grass produces big-time results in the garden.
