Water convolvulus is a member of the Convolvulaceae (morningglory) family. It is an herbaceous perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic plant of the tropics and subtropics. Trailing vine-like stems are hollow, adapted for floating in aquatic environments. Roots readily develop at nodes that are in contact with moist soil or water. It needs lots of water for fast growth. Watering is done manually or by irrigation system such as drip system.

There are two major cultivars of water spinach: Ching Quat ( green stem) water spinach and Pak Quat (white stem ) water spinach.

Recommended: soak the seeds in water at 45C for 6-8 hours. Optimum germination temperature is 25C~30C

Other names: Sichuan* (Szechuan) pickling mustard, Cha Tsoi, Tsa Tsai, Zha Cai, Cha Tsai, Mustard tube, Popotsai (Po Po Cai), Chingtoutsai (Qing Tou Cai), Katatow (Ga Da Tou), Sichuan swollen stem mustard, Big stem mustard, Yangtze river mustard, Fuling pickling mustard.

*Unique of Chinese origin and very popular in China. Tsatsai can be used in pickling and stir-fry. Sichuan is a province of China. It is famous for hot pepper and Tsa Tsai in China. Szechuan is an old English name of the province.

Tsa Tsai - Er Choy: Special variety in Szechuan Province of China. The stem is crispy and delicious and can be used in stir-fry, salad, pickling. Vigorous growing.

Description
Manoa is a Romaine / Cos type lettuce. Manoa is a compact, semi-heading lettuce. This heat tolerant variety is very popular in Hawaii. In cool areas, sow seeds in spring to mid-summer. In warm areas, sow seeds in fall. These crunchy and delicate light green leaves are delicious in salads.

How to grow

Karela Bitter Gourd / Momordica Charantia

Description
Karela bitter gourd is considered one of the most nutritious gourds.
High yield. This vine has a slender hairy stem with numerous branches and dense foliage. Each plant bears separate yellow male and female flowers. The fruit is about 10-20cm in length and have dark green skin with scattered tubercles.
They are oblong with bluntly tapering ends and pale green in colour, with a gently undulating, warty surface. Some varieties have a narrower shape with pointed ends, and a surface covered with jagged, triangular 'teeth' and ridges.
It taste bitter than regular bitter gourd but it is very tender.
Rich in vitamin A, C, Dietary Fiber, Calcium, Phosphourus, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium and Iron, etc.

Description
Pure white color and egg shape. White eggplants are smaller and more firmly textured than the common purple eggplant. They are denser, creamier and less bitter. The skin of a white eggplant is tougher than purple eggplant and must be peeled.

Description
Crispy crunchy, delicious nutritious, and easy to grow. Leaf lettuce is a cool weather plant. Select a sunny location and Sow seeds sparingly in Spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant every 2 weeks to extend harvest. Stop planting once the weather starts getting too warm. Resume planting once weather cools in late summer.

In addition to their most common use in salads, you can also braise, steam, sauté and even grill certain lettuce varieties to create a wonderful and different taste treat. Roselle / Hibiscus Sabdariffa

Description
Roselle is an annual, erect, bushy, herbaceous subshrub to 8 ft (2.4 m) tall, with smooth or nearly smooth, cylindrical, typically red stems. The leaves are alternate, 3 to 5 in (7.5-12.5 cm) long, green with reddish veins and long or short petioles. Flowers, borne singly in the leaf axils, yellow or buff with a rose or maroon eye, and turn pink as they wither at the end of the day.
The young leaves are used for culinary purposes–usually cooked with rice or vegetables because of their acid flavor.
Used as treatment for several diseases such as hypertension and urinary tract infections.

How to grow
Climate
Roselle is very sensitive to frost. It succeeds best in tropical and subtropical regions from sea-level up to 3,000 ft (900 m) with a rainfall of about 72 in (182 cm) during its growing season. Where rainfall is inadequate, irrigation has given good results. It can be grown as a summer crop in temperate regions. The fruits will not ripen, but the herbage is usable.

Soil
While deep, fairly fertile sandy loam is preferable, roselle grew and produced well over many years in the oölitic limestone of Dade County. Wester observed that the high pinelands were far more suitable than low-lying muck soils. The plants tended to reseed themselves and on some properties they spread so extensively they became a nuisance and were eradicated.

Propagation
Roselle is usually propagated by seed but grows readily from cuttings. The latter method results in shorter plants preferred in India for interplanting with tree crops but the yield of calyces is relatively low.

Oriental Melon, Hybrid Golden Sweet

Fruits have smooth, golden skin and crisp, sweet white flesh with the sugar content at 12 brix. The oblong-shaped melon is 4-6 inches long and 3-4 inches wide, 350 grams in weight. Plant grows vigorously in warm climates. This melon is very prolific and is very popular in Taiwan, Korea and Japan. Sow seeds in seed boxes in spring and transplant to the open field when 3-5 inches high. The plant begins to set fruits 40 days after transplanting. Note that the fruit skin turns into yellow at the prematured stage and should not harvest at this time, but wait for a few more weeks to reach the matured conditions.

Korean Melon, Hybrid Golden Liner

This hybrid Korean melon produces fruit with golden color skin that has silver lines running end-to-end. The white flesh is very crisp and sweet. Fruits are oblong in shape and about 300-450 grams in weight. The plant grows very well in greenhouse and open field. Excellent fruit settings. Strongly recommended for home gardening and fresh markets.

Watermelon, Hybrid Goldern Pioneer

This is a watermelon with goldern color skin and red flesh inside, newly developed in Asia. Fruits are 5-7 Kg in weight and 11 brix degree in sweetness. Plants are vigorous and start to set flowers/fruits 45 days after transplanting. Watermelon are ready to harvest 50-55 days thereafter. This unique watermelon with golden yellow skin and deep goldern stripes is very attractive and becomes very popular at the fresh markets in Asia.

Land Seaweed, Okahijiki

Land Seaweed is one of Salsola family species. This variety, called Okahijiki in Japan, is a salt marsh plant adapted to grow in soil or water with high level of salt. This unique plant grow matchstick leaves and tips that are harvested for vegetable uses. Young leaves are sold as one of the gourment vegetalbes in the markets, which are used in sushi, salad and many Japanese food. Plants grow vigorously in warm climates and can be grown in containers too. An interesting plant for home gardening.

Chinese Lettuce, Seven Wonders

Seven Wonders is a very versatile semi-heading lettuce. Plants are very slow in bolting and tolerant to heat and rain. This variety is resistant to tip burn and soft rot, suitable for all year round planting in mild climates. Tender leaves are very sweet and will not turn bitter even under high temperature weather. Very popular in Southern China. Excellent variety and easy to grow.

A newly developed hybrid lettuce from Tokita, one of the leading seed companies in Japan. Plants grow very well in warm and mild climates, suitable for growing almost all year round. Young green leaves are very tasty and delicious, excellent for salad and cooking uses. This fast growing vegetable can be picked at any growing stage and many harvests can be obtained by the cut-and-grow-again method. An excellent variety for home garden and fresh market.

This variety produces green leaves with reddish margin. This fast growing plant can be harvested in 30 days after sowing. Leaves are very delicious with excellent flavor, good for salad and cooking using. In Orient, large single leaf is often used in wrappping and eaten with the cooked or stir fried food. Plants adapt very well to heat and cool weather, suitable for growing all year round. An excellent lettuce for home garden and fresh market.
