RD için cobraplanta sorduğum soru ve cevabı

QUESTION:
I want to buy Roridula dentata, but it's not listed in your inventory.

ANSWER:
We don't grow Roridula, and probably won't in the near future. It is an extremely challenging plant to grow, especially if you live in zones 8 or less. They are very prone to fungal infection, so they are not very tolerant of high humidity or cool temperatures.

Incidentally, Roridula, a native of South Africa, is carnivorous by proxy. It has resinous dew drops along its stems that capture insects. However, it does not produce enzymes that breakdown the insects. To do that, the plant has a symbiotic relationship with a beetle that has figured out how not to get caught in the resinous droplets. The beetle eats the insects, and the plant absorbs the nutritious beetle droppings. So in this regard, they are not truly carnivorous, only by proxy.

In cultivation, to feed this plant, you'll need to have these particular beetles on hand or use a foliar spray. Again, the plant is intolerant of high humidity, so even a foliar spray has to be used judiciously.

If you really want to give this plant a try, I suggest doing a web search to find seeds.

On a side note, genetics research have found that Roridula shares similar genes to Sarracenia, Heliamphora and Darlingtonia.
Good Growing!
